Three major nonprofits are teaming up to build a major senior assisted living center in Detroit’s East Jefferson Avenue corridor.
The center will rise in the east riverfront district just north of the current GM/UAW joint training center about a mile east of the Renaissance Center. It will be located about midway between the Detroit River and Jefferson.
Henry Ford Health System, Presbyterian Villages of Michigan and United Methodist Retirement Communities are teaming up to build and operate the center. In addition, the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan contributed a $2-million investment to enable the three partner institutions to purchase the necessary property and begin broader fund-raising.
In addition to this grant, the collaboration is working to finalize funding commitments for an initial $24.6-million community investment that includes tax credit allocations, loans and grants from the State of Michigan, Wayne County and the City of Detroit, and investment by the three partners.
When built, the center will offer both residential assisted living for seniors as well as facilities for daily outpatient services.
The first floor of the complex will feature health care services for seniors who are otherwise living at home. The floors above that will contain affordable assisted living units.
A second phase of the project will include residential units with 24-hour skilled nursing services available.
The complex will also include a senior-friendly neighborhood café offering light dining, computers and other services.
The collaboration estimated that the project will create 183 ongoing, new economy health care jobs and more than 350 construction jobs.
