Two months after agreeing to combine into eight-hospital Beaumont Health, the 330-bed Botsford Hospital has announced a $160 million expansion plan on its Farmington Hills campus.
Botsford Hospital CEO Paul LaCasse, D.O., said the osteopathic hospital plans to begin construction next summer after receiving expected certificate-of-need approval in the spring from the Michigan Department of Community Health.
LaCasse said construction will include a five-story, 80-bed tower, bringing the total number of private patient rooms to 160 with an additional 24 private intensive care unit beds.
Most hospitals in Southeast Michigan have been spending millions of dollars to convert semi-private rooms to private for patient convenience and improved quality.
Botsford’s emergency and trauma center also will be expanded and critical care and observation units added. Surgical services will be updated with nine new operating rooms.
“As advances are made in medical technology and the needs of our patients grow, our hospital must build to meet patient needs for the immediate and long-term future,” LaCasse said in a statement.
“With this expansion, patients and their families will benefit from the most innovative and advanced medical technologies in a safe and welcoming environment designed for patient-centered care.”
In early September, Botsford Healthcare agreed to merge with Dearborn-based Oakwood Healthcare Inc. and Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak to form a $3.8 billion integrated health system with more than 3,300 beds.
Experts told Crain’s that one benefit from the merger could be lower borrowing costs.
In a statement, Gene Michalski, CEO of Beaumont Health, said the larger size of Beaumont will enable affiliated hospitals to more easily embark on facility and technology improvements. “As a larger organization, we can better fund projects benefiting those who receive care and deliver care at Beaumont Health,” Michalski said.
Financing for the project will come from bonds and community fundraising through The Botsford Foundation, a hospital statement said.
Each year, Botsford treats 16,000 inpatients and more than 60,000 emergency and trauma patients with 2,500 employees, 600 physicians and 300 volunteers.
Last year, Botsford’s board approved a $7.5 million project to renovate 90,000 square feet of the hospital that included patient rooms, nursing stations and walkways.
