Business Expansions, Community Improvement Project to Generate $58.4M in Michigan

Five business expansions and one community revitalization project received approval Wednesday from the Michigan Strategic Fund. The projects are expected to generate $58.4 million and create 480 jobs in the state.

“We’re working to spark business growth, revitalize communities, and create more and better jobs for our residents,” says Steve Arwood, CEO of Michigan Economic Development Corp. “These investments demonstrate Michigan’s improving economy and the success of our strategy to help growing companies generate new job opportunities.”

Dorel Home Furnishings, a subsidiary of Dorel Industries, is a manufacturer of ready-to-assemble furniture that is sold to major retailers. The company has plans to expand its facility in Dowagiac, a city on the western side of the state. The project is expected to produce $2 million and create 87 jobs. The Michigan Business Development Program has awarded Dorel a $348,000 performance-based grant.

Headquartered in Urbana, Illinois, Flex N Gate Shelby is a supplier of bumpers, exterior trim, lighting, and other OEM automotive products. The company plans to lease space in a build-to-suit facility in Shelby Township, investing $11 million and creating 242 jobs. As a result, Flex N Gate Shelby has received a $900,00 MBDP performance-based grant.

Humanetics Innovative Solutions has plans to outgrow its two metro Detroit locations, and is expected to consolidate into a new facility in Farmington Hills. With a $350,000 grant, the safety test equipment manufacturing company will generate a capital investment of $14.2 million and create 52 jobs.

NxGen MDx is a clinical molecular diagnostics laboratory that delivers accurate genetic screening detection rates located in Grand Rapids.  The company plans to expand into a new building, investing $2.9 million and producing 37 jobs. The MBDP has awarded NxGen MDx a $250,000 grant for its new development.
